Where next, Persija?

As Persija slumped to the pitch last night, looking on as Persipura celebrated their second championship in five years they must be wondering when their chance will come again.

An eightgame unbeaten run in the middle of the season had made them serious challengers and with the addition of Fabio Lopes up front coach Danurwindo had boosted an already impressive looking arsenal. Crushing Persiwa 6-1 showed this side were finally capable of lifting their first title in eight years.

But then, following the presedential election break all the good work unravelled as Persija struggled to find any of their former fluency. They slipped alarmingly down the table in a nightmare run of four defeats and three draws that saw the ambitions disappear for another season.

That they should see Persipura triumph must have been a bitter pill for the Kemayoran Tigers to swallow. In 2005 the Jayapura side beat them in the Liga final 3-2. Last season they again were beaten in the Copa Indonesia semi finals.

For now only the Copa remains. But should they defeat Deltras in the quarter final they come up against their old nemesis in the semis. Persipura. Again.
